Graham Stevenson, the Communist candidate for the WMCA Mayor, has called on fellow candidates to join him in supporting the counter demonstration against the English Defence League in Victoria Square from 1pm - 4pm on Saturday April 8th.

“In a cynical move to reinforce their hatred of our diverse communities, the English Defence League have switched a demonstration, planned to take place in Derby, to the city of Birmingham.

This is their opportunist response to the events of Wednesday March 22nd in Westminster, where five people were killed and many critically injured. While we joined together as a city to mourn the dead, the EDL decided to capitalise on our grief, seeking to divide and spread their Islamophobia.

We will not give the oxygen of publicity to their fascist ideas, and we will not stand by and allow them to circulate their incitement to hate. We will however remain proud of our city, and its vibrant blend of cultures and experiences. History has shown that fascists will always be defeated; we stand in solidarity against the EDL.

I ask the five other candidates to offer themselves to speak as one in a common statement of support for community cohesion.”
