Commemorative march, rally and festival - June 22nd 2019

Silk Mill T shirt blackThis year’s commemorative T-Shirts for the historic Derby Silk Mill Turn Out Festival are now available and selling fast. The shirts show the Silk Mill itself as it was in 1883/84 with its gates firmly shut by the owners, locking out the workers who had threatened to form a Trade Union against the regular practice of “docking” pay. The shirt slogan is “Locked Out But Not Ground Down!

The Silk Mill Turn Out events will include a lively processional march and rally starting at 10.30 from Derby Market Place, and 12 midday – 4.30pm at Cathedral Green with

  • great music, drumming marching bands and spectacle on the move
  • a laying of a commemorative chaplet to the 1834 workers and their families at the Silk Mill gates
  • a rally with big name speakers from the Trade Union, Labour, Disability and anti-austerity movement to be revealed closer to the event
  • competitions for the best home made placard on the procession and the best photographs taken on the day
  • a big festival on Cathedral Green including live music, community stalls, kids activities, ice cream, food and drink and much more

all MCd by Derby’s own nationally renowned Spoken Word and Poetry Performer, Sophie Sparham.
